Dezember 23, 2010: New joint library for research institutes

Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL are intensifying their cooperation by fusing their respective libraries. The joint library, "Lib4RI" (Library for the Research Institutes within the ETH Domain: Eawag, Empa, PSI & WSL), will bring synergies and increased efficiency. It will allow the four institutions to make much-needed additions to their stock of literature as early as 1st January 2011 and this after a planning phase lasting only a few months. Lib4RI organisation and administration will be the responsibility of Eawag. Lib4RI Director will be Lothar Nunnenmacher.

The existing inventories will remain at their respective locations and, via the NEBIS lending association, will be accessible to all staff, regardless of the research institute they work at. There will also be an improved, state-of-the-art, electronic library. The new Lib4RI website, scheduled to go online on 10th February 2011, will provide access to all library services and resources. The roll-out will coincide with the official opening of the new library - at 9.30am at PSI, at 1pm at WSL and at 4.30pm at Eawag. Invitations to the opening will be sent separately.

August 27, 2010: The Federal geoportal is online

The Swiss Confederation is offering a publicly accessible portal for geographical information, services and geodata. It can be accessed via www.geo.admin.ch.

The platform unifies geographical information on the environment, transport, energy, agriculture, forestry, development planning, landregulations, telecommunications, population, health, economy, and many other issues. Furthermore, historical map material allows e.g. the reconstruction of the development of landscape (e.g. glaciers) or cities.

The geoportal includes more than 60 data sets from different Federal Offices and links to 20 specialised Federal data portals. With the keywords search option the desired information can be easily found. The data can be viewed in a map viewer and printed out. They can be ordered from the relevant Federal Office for a fee and are available in different map scales and formats.

The geoportal is operated by the Federal Office of Topography, swisstopo.

June 18, 2010: Trial access: Academic Search Complete until 13.08.2010 (expired)

Academic Search Complete can be accessed via http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&profile=ehost&defaultdb=a9h.

Academic Search Complete is a multi-disciplinary database with more than 7900 full-text periodicals (including 6800 peer-reviewed journals). In addition it offers abstracts for about 12,000 journals, monographs, conference proceedings, etc. The full-text content (PDFs) goes back as far as 1887. Furthermore, searchable cited references are provided for more than 1300 journals.

Academic Search Complete is a product from EBSCOhost and is updated daily. In providing full-text, EBSCO is dependent on publisher publication schedules and publisher policies such as restrictions on full-text access of the most recent issues (embargo periods).

There are several ways a search can be carried out and the list of publications can be browsed (via "Publications"). In order to save and retrieve your search history and create email alerts you need to create a My EBSCOhost account, whereas RSS feeds can be activated without registration.

Further information on Academic Search Complete can be found here.

This trial lasts until August 13, 2010. We are looking forward to your opinion and are pleased to receive your feedback at maura.vonmoos@eawag-empa.ch.
